According to Hindu mythology, Shiva, who is the God of dance in his Nataraja form, used to do his famous Tandava dance here in the Himalayas. Different communities have their own dance forms which are performed during various festivals, fairs, and family occasions.
Nepali dances are very important for life, culture, and traditions. It is also a good source of entertainment as well as an effective refresher. The movement of feet and body in the rhythm of song or music in a pleasing way is dance. The complement of dance is song and music. Mainly we can classify Nepali dance into three kinds, ‘Mask Dance, Folk Dances and Charya Dances.’

Even a mediocre idea or a business can do very well, simply because they can execute well and has a stronger will to do things. At times many people and organisations with the most brilliant ideas get left behind as they don’t follow through due to lack of strong will.

Couple of generations or even decades ago, if people thought of doing something, they did it - then –not later, not tomorrow or next week or something, whether to go to the market, change a light bulb, keep an appointment or commitment, courage to express their thoughts and feelings, to keep your word to others and more importantly to yourselves, to be able to say NO to some work or someone, to do the repairs around the house, to start-something and complete what we started, being punctual if not early and so on. These are usually the same qualities which are there in people who inspire us.

So what’s changed? Can we turn back the clock and is there a way to cultivate these qualities consciously and overcome our challenges on inertia.

The role of the adult in Democratic Education is often discussed and naturally there are varying ideas about it. In INFINITA we support children as the protagonists of their learning journey. We aim to support them to know themselves and each other and to make conscious decisions about how they live their lives and spend their time in school.

As a democratic school….we are a community of learners and leaders. We support young people to honour the impulses of their bodies, hearts and minds. We learn with and from each other. We feed community learning with ongoing inquiry and study as well as self-reflection and celebration. This includes ongoing inquiry about supporting learners (and the team) to know themselves and in the development of making conscious choices that are meaningful to them.

Now in our eighth year, we recognize mentorship as an important gesture that, like natural learning, is something we can and want to continuously learn from and develop.

As a democratic school we are a community - of learners and leaders. We support young people to honour the impulses of their bodies, hearts and minds. We learn with and from each other. Details : This workshop aims to focus discussion around the question: How does curricula shape spaces of learning in primary and secondary schools? I will structure my discussion based on the findings of my research on Delhi’s state schools. My findings are that currently space is shaped only based on administrative convenience. It does not respond to the diverse structure of the curricula. I used the curricula framework of the 3H (Head, Hand and Heart) along with Architect Herman Hertzberger’s framework of space in which he looks at the School as a combination of the Home, Street, Neighborhood and City to redesign a government school where there is a relationship between curricula and space.

Participants have found employment and places to live, started new businesses, located items of need, and initiated significant friendships. The process is a proven way to boost self-esteem and trust within communities, while dramatically increasing the local sourcing of goods & services.

We all have amazing things to offer. When we share what we have to offer, life becomes simpler, more enjoyable and more meaningful.

Juli is thrilled to be joined by Samantha Wittenberg as co-facilitator for our market. Sam's experience with community exchange systems spans two continents.

As regards contribution, we ask that you consider your position in the moneyed economy. There are many right now who do not have funds and we hope to be able to include everyone. Why I decided to start PLEJ
In a world full of chaos, stress, violence and discrimination; I wanted to do something to raise awareness and help those in need. So many people don’t even know what is happening to other people, how the world is suffering, how the world is slowly becoming a place where no one cares about each other, where people don’t care whether other people are suffering or not, where issues like black lives matter, feminism, global warming, climate change, extinction of animals on land and water are just start of a million more issues maybe worse than this, in a world like this I intend to leave a mark that I converted the negative into the positive.
Here in PLEJ we take the negative and convert it into the positive. We raise awareness and help those in need through this platform. We express our thoughts on issues like Black Lives Matter, Feminism etc. and inspire people to take charge. Here we believe that we can change the part of the world we think should be changed. We can make a difference if we wish to.'

RIEDU started with a dream. Our own research & Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) Test Reports depicted a global decrease in age-appropriate reading and writing comprehension levels among children. We at RIEDU consider it a dangerous sign. As George Orwell said, “People, who can’t write well, can’t think well and those who can’t think, someone else will think for them”. The quest to find a solution to the issue, led us to create our In-house research-based publication for children formulated form United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4.7. Thus, Pole Star is not an ordinary children’s book. Pole Star is a movement. It is a research based children’s book that aims to nurture the future scions into humane beings to build an inclusive world of peace, love, brotherhood, equality & justice.

While creating the Pole Star, another question arose: How do we involve children as active participants in our publication? How to empower them as leaders? How to develop critical thinking? How to imbibe an inclusive approach of the world? Thus, emerged the esteemed position of ‘Young Editors’ an Inclusive Editorial Board comprising of children in the age group of 8-15 years from across the globe. They all are super talented bunch of kids unique in age, gender, color, religion, region, language, ability, and disability selected through our various writing & painting contests that we run on our social media. Every ‘Young Editor’ is loved and celebrated. Thus, each volume of Pole Star is created of, for & by the children.

On Developing a Theory of Democratic Schools

Why do traditional schools persist against all odds? One reason is: they are deeply rooted in the way we think. They are backed up by implicit assumptions and by explicit theory.

One weakness of the democratic schools movement is that it has not yet developed a theory of its own. That could be one reason why the democratic schools at the universities have so far hardly been noticed and play almost no role in teacher training.

The need for a theory of democratic schools arises from the experience that there are different understandings of what is meant by a democratic school. These different views can be in contradiction to one another without either of them being "wrong". There are different “interpretations” of one and the same idea: the idea of ​​democratic schools.

Such a theory would have to meet at least three requirements. Firstly, it would have to take up the problems, conflicts and contradictions arising from practice and help to contextualize them and make them accessible to a rational debate. Second, based on its findings, it should be able to identify possible solutions for these problems, conflicts and contradictions and make them available to those who are in need of them. Thirdly, a theory of democratic schools should be connected, both with neighboring scientific disciplines and with related areas of social practice.

Almost a hundred years ago, in 1925, the German educational scientist and reform pedagogue Georg Reichwein published his essay “Basics of a Theory of School”, which - for the first time - explicitly speaks of a theory of the school. And with Summerhill - founded in Germany in 1921 - the oldest democratic school will celebrate its 100th birthday next year. It is time to connect both - the theory of the school and the democratic schools: Let's develop a Theory of Democratic Schools!

With hydro energy being one of the convenient and available energy source for the
development of any given State, the film tries to understand the relationship between
various groups and communities of Sikkim and West Bengal with River Teesta. This film
tries to trace the faint and unheard voices of local people who are affected by these
developments. It travels from the source of River Teesta till the tip of the plains of North
Bengal, traverses through mini and mega hydel projects to capture these naked voices
and their bond, angst, adaptation and reconciliation with River Teesta.
The story particularly revolves around the unique practice and beliefs of mountain
communities and they express their significance of the river through their folklore,
sacred ritual and scriptures. Communities from downstream struggle to balance their
faith and religion with such developments and others confess the helpless need of
sustaining and adapting to the changing economic patterns and surmounting
unemployment. The film eventually ends with a question if Teesta will ever speak for
herself.

Details : In Yaacov’s talk “Democratic Education and the great Covid-19 opportunity” some of you heard about my sense that as a global community we are missing something in the opportunity given to us this year.

It is a gut feeling.
I feel we have an opportunity to make MUCH more effective use of the globalisation of our connection, communication and potential collaboration in three areas:
-legal organisation beyond borders, there must be an international legal umbrella for democratic educational projects/programs/schools/learning communities
-financial organisation beyond borders, there must be a way to share resources
-digital function beyond borders, in the first lockdown the Global Online Democratic School (aka WINDS) proposed the creation of a global digital democratic learning platform. The Spring Academy (https://springacademy.gr/en/home/) had this (smaller scale) in its plans before the pandemic and is working towards making it (larger scale) happen.

I wanted to share the project of Spring Academy in relation to all the above with a workshop but because of extreme personal difficulties I did not manage so far.

Is there interest in a workshop about this tomorrow even though it is our last FULL day and/or in discussing it here/elsewhere?

The Spring Academy idea was born in 2015 out of research during the AERO’s School Starter’s Consultation Program into how to overcome the obstacles faced by any educational project which differs from the established educational system in any country where freedom of choice in education is restricted.
This research was, and continues to be, in collaboration with educational reform experts and organisations from all over the world.
Our efforts to alter legislation based on human rights violations in order to decriminalize alternative education in Greece, creating a legal precedent for other countries in similar situations, have shown that this will take a long time still.
This means that alongside these efforts we need to devise a legal status for educational initiatives which can overcome the restrictions and operate while the case for the decriminalization of alternative education is processed further in the ECtHR and the UN HRC.
Spring Academy aims to offer this legal framework of protection, as a model for open use, to alternative educational initiatives of various forms, potentially beyond borders. It also aims to create a digital home for a global learning community with the creation of a digital Spring Academy facilitating "blended learning" (a combination of on and off line learning) and serving the community in times of total lockdown. We have an opportunity to establish freedom of choice in learning in general as digital educational interaction is the foundation for many other educational options that are still not available.

As we are getting more virtual & more disconnected with each other, especially today’s lockdown and post pandemic times, how can we build competencies in ourselves and our young for being a democratic citizen ?

What should we focus on ?
Is it knowledge of democracy , or skills required or values or something else?
How can we live in harmony with each other, especially as all live in cylos of virtual world ?

We would like to participate in a discussion as we share our experience of enabling young as Youth Social Innovators @ campus, at SRUSHTI DEGREE COLLEGE. For the last 3 years we celebrating the Gandhiji’s 150th Birth Anniversary and are exploring the Idea of Satya or truth.
